The 2025 NY Experience

For the first time at Kilimanjaro International School, 9th-grade girls had the opportunity to live this amazing experience! But was it worth it? Absolutely! Let me tell you about this whole project!

The school’s main goal was for 9th graders to participate in the 69th Commission on the Status of Women, taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in March 2025. Putting our mission into practice, we sought to provide an opportunity to further enhance the shaping of the future Christian leaders who will transform society.

The CSW is mainly organized by UN Women, which is dedicated to the empowerment of girls and women worldwide. This gave our girls the chance to meet female leaders from around the world and from different cultures and backgrounds.

Before we arrived at the UN, the girls were afraid that they would feel out of place. To their surprise, all eyes were on them. They quickly realized that they were the only 14 to 15-year-olds at the CSW69, and they were the future leaders of the world in the making.

They interviewed female teachers, lawyers, doctors, politicians, and activists from Nigeria, Turkey, the USA, France, South Korea, Perú, Brazil, and many more. The following days, they would be greeted by all of these women as if they knew each other from years back. It was truly amazing seeing all of my girls learning about different cultures and having these great learning spaces and environments.

The best ending to the UN experience was attending Secretary-General António Guterres' conference at the General Assembly. At the end of the conference, the girls were greeted and allowed to take a picture with UN Women Director Executive Sima Bahous.

During the afternoons, we would continue the cultural experience by visiting the MoMA Museum, a city bus tourist attraction around the city, a tour to the Statue of Liberty, a visit to the Summit Museum, a visit to the Grand Central Station, and what I believe to be the favorite afternoon activity… WICKED on Broadway.

As this was the first 9th-grade international cultural trip, it was a challenge. However, this is a challenge I’m willing to take on for future generations, as this is a great experience for students to develop a great set of life-long skills, personal growth, and Christian leadership.

Por primera vez en Kilimanjaro International School, ¡las niñas de 9.º grado tuvieron la oportunidad de vivir esta increíble experiencia!
¿Pero valió la pena? ¡Por supuesto! ¡Déjenme contarles sobre todo este proyecto!

El objetivo principal de la escuela era que las niñas de 9.º grado participaran en la 69.ª Comisión de la Condición Jurídica y Social de la Mujer, que se llevaría a cabo en la sede de las Naciones Unidas en Nueva York en marzo de 2025. Poniendo nuestra misión en práctica, buscamos brindar una oportunidad para mejorar aún más la formación de las futuras líderes cristianas que transformarán la sociedad.

La CSW está organizada principalmente por ONU Mujeres, que se dedica al empoderamiento de las niñas y mujeres en todo el mundo. Esto les dio a nuestras niñas la oportunidad de conocer a líderes femeninas de todo el mundo y de diferentes culturas y orígenes. Antes de llegar a la ONU, las niñas tenían miedo de sentirse fuera de lugar. Para su sorpresa, todas las miradas estaban puestas en ellas. Pronto se dieron cuenta de que eran las únicas jóvenes de 14 y 15 años presentes en la CSW69, y que eran las futuras líderes mundiales.

Entrevistaron a profesoras, abogadas, médicas, políticas y activistas de Nigeria, Turquía, Estados Unidos, Francia, Corea del Sur, Perú, Brasil y muchos más. Los días siguientes, todas estas mujeres las recibirían como si se conocieran de años atrás. Fue realmente increíble ver a todas mis hijas aprendiendo sobre diferentes culturas y disfrutando de estos fantásticos espacios y entornos de aprendizaje. El mejor broche de oro para la experiencia en la ONU fue asistir a la conferencia del Secretario General António Guterres en la Asamblea General. Al final de la conferencia, las chicas fueron recibidas y se les permitió tomarse una foto con la Directora Ejecutiva de ONU Mujeres, Sima Bahous.

Durante las tardes, continuaríamos la experiencia cultural visitando el Museo MoMA, una atracción turística en autobús urbano por la ciudad, un recorrido por la Estatua de la Libertad, una visita al Museo Summit, una visita a la Grand Central Station y lo que creo que es la actividad favorita de la tarde... WICKED en Broadway. Como este fue el primer viaje cultural internacional de 9.º grado, fue un desafío.

Sin embargo, este es un desafío que estoy dispuesta a asumir para las generaciones futuras, ya que es una gran experiencia para que los estudiantes desarrollen un gran conjunto de habilidades para toda la vida, crecimiento personal y liderazgo cristiano.
